Peyton, Autism and My Yellow Laundry Room

I absolutely love shutters, on the outside of houses as well as decorating on the inside of a house. I actually have three pair of shutters in my home! 😁

When I decided that I was going to paint my laundry room… I figured out the color and the Decor based around a pair of gray shutters. I  have a nice size laundry room, but I don’t have a window in it.

I love the old tradition of hanging your clothes on the line. I know it isn’t  a very practical and it Could be  could be a real pain to do. I actually used to do it when my kids were young, sometimes. I love the smell of the fresh air on the clothes, as well as sheets.

Since I couldn’t bring the sunshine in to the laundry room, I decided to paint it like the sunshine. I picked a bright yellow. I remember the look on Mark’s face when he saw the color of the paint. And to be honest, after I got the paint home, I wasn’t so sure myself!

Peyton and I painted the laundry room together, we actually had a lot of fun doing it! We even made a really cool Craft out of wood and door handles, to be able to hang clothes that I didn’t want to put on the dryer.

It didn’t take us real long to paint the room, but it was also a good life lesson for Peyton. He learned how to paint. I love teaching him how to do things by actually doing them.

Although at first I had a little hesitation with the color, Peyton really loved it. The more we painted the room the more I loved it. It was bright, beautiful and bold. It reminded me of a bright sunny day.

After we were done with the painting, we put the room back together and decorated it. I hung the two gray shutters on the wall left a space between them and hung a pretty yellow wreath.

I love the calmness of gray shutters against the brightness of the yellow walls. They really balanced each other well! It had a farmhouse feel to it. I have some black wrought iron and antique items that I also put in there.

Once we have everything back in place, I step back to take a look. I absolutely love the way it looked. Peyton was a big help, not only the painting, but even with some of the decorating!

In a unique way this room with its bright yellow sunshine walls… Reminds me of Peyton. He brightens my days in ways that maybe others don’t understand… He teaches me so much about loyalty, perseverance, trust and unconditional love. I love the sweetness of his character, and how it shines through .

I think about Peyton  a lot when I walk in my laundry room… Not only because he help me with painting it… but because he is in many ways is the sunshine of my life. 🌞

Why run when you can walk?

Everyone who knows me knows I am a huge classic TV fan. In fact we got rid of DIRECTV and got Comcast. I love my husband for agreeing to do it!I know many people think that’s crazy. I love the channels that I can get on Comcast.

My favorite show ever is a show called Hazel, Not many people remember the show, but I certainly do. It’s on seven days a week on antenna TV. Which makes me extremely happy.

I Don’t only watch Hazel, I record the show and I also have season one and two on DVD. My awesome hubby bought them for me a few Christmases ago! To say I can’t get enough of Hazel, is probably true! In fact, I actually named one of our dogs after the show.

I’ve been asked many times why I love that show so much…  it’s kind of hard to explain why I do. Part of it is Hazel reminded me a lot of my grandma, who I really loved. I also really liked Don DeFore… I also loved the premise of the show. If you really paid attention to it there were a lot of life lessons in it.

The other day I was watching the show, as I always do, the show was about how we need to slow down. How we are always so busy trying to get somewhere, do something, get ahead… That we don’t really take the time to enjoy what’s right in front of us.

When I was watching the show I thought, wow this is from the early 60s and it still so relevant today. In fact I think we are more that way now than we were then. It’s sad that we decide that we have to get ahead… at the expense of living in the present.

Of course on the show Hazel found a way to get those around her to slow down. I’m not so sure we can get ourselves to slow down, let alone those around us.

I know life is a lot more complicated than a classic TV show, but there are definitely lessons that we can learn from them. The show got me thinking what am I missing in my day-to-day life that I should be paying more attention to. Sad to say, there were more things than I care to admit.

One of the many things that was on my list, was spending time just having Smalltalk. I’m a chatterbox,I admit it. So it seems a bit strange for me to say I don’t spend enough time having Smalltalk.

What I mean by not taking enough time for small talk is this… I don’t sit down with those close to me and just have conversations about what we have planned for the day, what did we do today what are we happy about, what are we sad about etc…

Upon reflection, I made a vow to myself that I was going to take more time each day to have that small talk, especially with Peyton. So Peyton  and I have started a routine of sitting in our office and just chatting. I honestly think it’s good for both of us.

I know taking this time to just chat, laugh and relax has help me feel less anxious. I can also see that it relaxes Peyton , and that makes me happy!

Even though classic TV shows may not always be exactly the way real life is… We can still learn a lot from them. So here’s to you Hazel for helping me learn to walk instead of run. Peyton and I thank  you… For teaching us a wonderful life’s lesson and helping us with our anxiety and stress, by doing such a simple thing as chatting! 💕💕

Bullies make me see Red

I know, I know everyone, well almost everyone, disdains bullies! Well, at least They SHOULD disdain bullies…..

Nowadays we hear a lot about bullies, everyone has a different definition of what a bully is. I’ve written several blogs about bullies. These blogs are based on my opinion and my definition of what I think a bully really is!

I think we can all agree, that certain people definitely fit the definition of bullies.  This blog is not about the “common definition” of bullies.

I am hypersensitive to bullies  because of Peyton. I’ve always been a mama bear to all of my kids, but I’m especially a helicopter Mama bear to Peyton!  I get extremely protective whenever I see an autistic child, teen or adult being bullied.

As I stated in previous blogs, we often hear it said that bullies are just terribly insecure people, and basically deflect not reflect on their insecurities. While I find this to be some what true, I think it goes deeper than that.

I think Bullies are insecure people, at least much of the time, but I also think many bullies  are narcissistic gaslighters. I also think that many bullies are truly unhappy in their own lives. So they invent fantasy lives, know they’re lying and then abuse other people because they’re angry that they’re not living that life!

Some of the biggest bullies that I’ve seen on social media, are also some of the biggest hypocrites. There have been times I’ve really wanted to call them out… But I also know that it’s a waste of time, because they generally don’t wanna listen anyway.

Being an autism activist, I thought long and hard about making my focal point bullying . After the story of the special-needs boy being tortured and bullied in Chicago and Facebook live, I knew I couldn’t be a bullying  activist.  That story touch me so deeply, that I still cry about it.

I decided that rather than be a bullying activist, I would actually offer comfort zones etc. for those who are  bullied. That’s a major focal point of our new project Team Awesomism. It’s to help those with autism, anxiety and stress find their comfort zones.

I have called a few bullies  out on Twitter, as well as blocked and reported some, and I don’t always mean to Twitter. There’s one thing that my husband has really taught me, don’t lower yourself to their level instead find solutions for those who are hurting.

Team Awesomism  was inspired by several things… One being finding solutions for those who are being bullied. Bullies are only bullies  because they feel like they have to have power over someone. What better way to empower someone, then help them find their inner strength and feel better about themselves?

We will be launching Team Awesomism  on September 15, which also happens to be Peyton’s  birthday! We are super excited about this project and can’t wait to share it with everyone!

In the meantime I ask this… Find commonality with everyone you come in contact with. It’s easy to find something to be angry or mean about… Just stop! If we treat others the way we want to be treated  as well as those we love… We’d have less hatred and more love. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, as well as their beliefs… If you make this a rule in your life… You’ll stop and think before you deflect and actually reflect!

Lavender, Anxiety and Me!!

As I discussed in a previous blog, I have GAD… General anxiety disorder. There are days that my anxiety gets the best of me. While  I’ve learned to deal with my anxiety for the most part, there are days it overwhelms me.

One of my favorite go to items that I use when I am extremely anxious, stressed or just in a serious need of a break… Is… LAVENDER! 💜  Oh my I absolutely love lavender! 💜

I love it in the essential oil‘s, bath salts, bubble bath, lavender spray actually anything lavender makes me happy! Williams and Sonoma used to have this amazing lavender laundry detergent, I couldn’t get enough of it! I was so sad when they got rid of it. It was the best thing to use on my PJs, my sheets and pillow cases.

I found a few that I really like but not as much as that! So if you know of any, I’d love to hear some suggestions! Rather than dwelling on the negative’s, let’s talk about some lavender products that I really love! 💜

I’ve fallen in love with rollers lately, and I found one that I absolutely love! There are many good ones on the market… But this one  is definitely my favorite. It’s made by open heart apothecary.  You can actually buy them through Patti and Ricky. Here is the link to their website. They have other awesome rollers, but I absolutely love the lavender. https://www.pattiandricky.com/

They also have a really wonderful spray that you can use either in the air or I use it on my pillow before I go to sleep at night, so does Peyton. It’s called calm… It has lavender and other essential oil’s. I especially love using this until I find that perfect lavender laundry soap!

My new lavender obsession I actually came upon, because my wonderful  husband gave me these as a gift! They are an amazingly awesome epsom bath salt. They are made by San Francisco salt company! You can use them in the bath, in the shower or even as a foot soak! https://www.sfsalt.com/m-home

No matter where you use them, especially the tub or as a foot soak, I would definitely leave the water for a while because the smell is heavenly 💜… it will give you such a relaxing  lavender smell throughout whatever room you’ve used it in! It’s so calming.

We have some fantastic  lavender farms here in Texas! In fact Peyton and I plan to go to a seminar in the fall at one of the lavender farms in Hill Country, to learn more about lavender. I tried to grow it several times… Had very little success.

Peyton and I put some in his garden, but we really didn’t get much out of it. We were both pretty sad. We decided we want to learn more about growing  it,before we try again.

Mark, Peyton and I went to a lavender farm a couple of years ago, I bought the most amazing lavender jelly. I’d love to learn how to grow it so I can make more products with it!

I’m always looking for new lavender products to try, recipes that use lavender, as well as suggestions of how to use lavender! So if you have a product you’d like me to try, or suggestions or even recipes I’d love to hear from you!

As always thanks for reading my blog, I’d love to hear from you and lavender on! 💜

Facing his Fears

August 1st Peyton and I are going to be launching Team Awesomism!  We are really excited about this new project!

In preparation for this new project Peyton and I have been doing some small projects to lead up to it!  Once we announce what team Awesomism is, all the little projects we’ve been doing will make more sense.

Peyton has always been afraid since he was little of motorcycles.  The noise and vibration that they put off, always scared him. Part of Team Awesomism is about facing your fears, and finding your comforts!

About a month ago Peyton came to me and said, I really want to learn to ride a bike, and I really want to stop being afraid of motorcycles. I kind of saw the connection between the two. Even though bikes don’t make noise, he still was afraid to get on one and fall!

He and I sat down and discussed his fear of both. He told me that he was afraid of falling on a bike and he felt like a motorcycle was a very loud and aggressive bike.  In his mind, there was a direct connection between the two.

I may not always understand why he is afraid of certain things or doing certain things, but I respect his fear. We each have our own idiosyncrasies and he certainly allowed to have his!

On July 7, the local  BMW, Indian, Singleshot motorcycle dealership had an awesome event. They were doing a virtual reality motorcycle ride at the dealership.

I contacted them before the event, and asked them if it was OK if Peyton and I attended. They were super nice about it,and said absolutely come on over!

When we got to the dealership, I could tell Peyton was a bit apprehensive. I asked him if he still wanted to go in and try it. He said absolutely he wanted to get to a point where he didn’t fear motorcycles.  He actually felt that if he got over his fear of motorcycles, it would help him ride a bike.

So in we went! They had food out as well as some drinks. I asked Peyton if he wanted something to eat and drink, thinking this would probably calm him down and ease  him into being around the motorcycles.

Once we were done eating, I asked the people working there, if it was OK if Peyton tried the virtual reality. I discussed with them that Peyton was autistic, and why he wanted to do the virtual reality,as well as look at all the motorcycles .

They couldn’t have been nicer, they were so accommodating to Peyton. It really touched my heart, how nice they were.

Peyton did the virtual reality, and absolutely loved it. He sat in the chair, because he wasn’t sure he wanted to sit on a motorcycle. Once he started the virtual reality on the motorcycle, he got really into it. It was funny to watch him and I was so happy to see how much he loved it.

think the best moment was when he was doing the virtual reality, and they started motorcycle right behind him! He never flinched, in fact he really enjoyed it! It was so awesome to see him overcome that fear!

After we left the motorcycle shop, Peyton  asked me if we could go look at bikes! It was great because for the first time wanted to actually look at bikes and talk about buying one, so he could learn to ride a bike!

I can’t thank the guys at the BMW Indian single shot dealership in the Woodlands Texas, enough! They were so incredible to Peyton, they even asked him before they started up motorcycles, if it was OK!!

Peyton overcame a major fear of his that day,  it was such an awesome day! I’m so proud of him and how hard he is trying to overcome fears.
