Flipboard and Turning Autism into Awesomism

Before I say anything I want to post a disclaimer:

I am not, nor have I been a therapist. I’m a mom of an autistic teen, Peyton, who is 18 1/2 years old. Okay, now that we have that out-of-the-way, we can discuss the Awesomness of Flipboard and how’s it Helping us Turn Autism into Awesomism! 💙

Anyone who knows me or follows me on twitter, knows I am obsessed with Flipboard… allow me to explain why!

When Peyton was younger we did “Magazine Therapy” ….. it wasn’t really THERAPY, but it is the EASIEST way to describe what we did! Now you understand why I had my disclaimer… I don’t want any misunderstandings.

Okay so what is Magazine therapy? It’s easier to show than explain, but I’m going to do my best, because it was awesome for Peyton. Peyton was a very late talker.. he was also a late reader. His vocabulary and comprehension of so many things, was delayed and or nonexistent.

As his Mom this tore my heart out. I saw the pain in his eyes. I wanted to help, but wasn’t sure how. The traditional ideas weren’t working.

I had a friend suggest to me to have him look at magazines. She had an autistic son and she said it calmed him and seem to help him. I became obsessed with trying this. So off to Barnes and Nobles I went.

I came home with a pile of magazines… Peyton and I sat on the couch and started through the magazines. To my delight he was interested! He sat there with me thumbing through pages. I described and named objects on each page…

Peyton sat silent… but he was intensely looking at each page. After an hour or so… I said “okay did you like that!” He smiled and said YES! I knew we had a winner!

I started doing this everyday with him. He seemed to really like “Town and Country” Magazines, so I focused on those. He learned so much from magazines and to this day, I’m a huge fan! I know I’ve written about this before… November of 2016 to be exact… but there is a reason why I’m bringing this up again.

Here is that blog .. I know some of it’s repetitive, but trust me… it’s so important that 2,3 ….. times…. is okay!! http://www.awesomismmom.com/flipping-autism-into-awesomism/

I’m sure you’re asking yourself right now… why is this so important? That it needs repeated blogs… because Flipboard is an awesome tool for autistic teens and adults, for so many reasons!

Okay so now you’re saying TELL US why and how!  Remember when I said earlier in this blog it’s easier to show than tell? Well, that’s exactly what Peyton and I are planning on doing!

We are going to be introducing our new project “Team Awesomism Turning Autism into Awesomism” a teen and adult version of “Magazine Therapy” Here are just a few of the topics we will covering… Life Skills.. Social Skills… Anxiety….It will be learning in a fun, unique and awesome way! We are super excited and will be releasing this soon! Please watch for our kickoff of TEAM Awesomism!

If you’re not sure what Flipboard is or how to use it,here is a blog by my husband that will help. 😊

Peyton’s Inspirational Sign

The other day Peyton got this Inspire sign: he really loves it.  I was looking at it and realized the words on it, really described Peyton! He’s such an amazing and inspiring young man. I especially love the second part of the description… (2) “To awaken a particular feeling in somebody”.

He inspires, awakens etc… love, strength, patience, goals, effort, enthusiasm etc…. The best part of it is, he doesn’t even realize how much he inspires others.

I’ve said this many times in my blogs, how sweet he is. He really has a sweet heart and genuinely cares about others. He worries about others with such a pure and open heart. He doesn’t enter a “relationship” with preconceived ideas, thoughts or views. He takes everyone at face value.

I envy that about him, I wish I had that kind of trust and positive vulnerability … meaning he allows people to show him who they are, without deciding who they are. This isn’t to say he likes everyone… rather that he gives you the opportunity to be his friend. He’s optimistic that you are who you present yourself as . When he cares, he cares with a full and open heart.

It goes without saying that Peyton is the inspiration behind AwesomismMom…but even deeper than that … He’s the inspiration for “Team Awesomism Turning Autism into Awesomism” I’ve told him for years.. he has Awesomism not Autism. He’s the special one.. the rest of us in the family are “the same”  While we all know we are all individuals, Peyton is extremely special to us in so many positive ways.

I love watching Peyton when he’s in situations he feels comfortable in, like his Prom. He’s so happy, calm and engaged. He enjoys companionship, especially with others who take the time to connect with him.

He’s getting better about feeling comfortable in all settings. I’ve watched him go from a  shy, insecure, scared kid to someone who actually wants to go outside his “comfort zone”

The last 8 months have been a roller coaster… I’ve had some serious health issues. In the past Peyton would have stressed nonstop. Instead he faced the  situation at hand and dealt with it! We are so proud of him.

I’ve been stressing about our new project… “Team Awesomism Turning Autism into Awesomism” I sat down with him the other day with a LONG to do list. I asked him to look at it and tell me what he thought he could help me with, because I was feeling overwhelmed. He looked at me and said “ If we want to do this project, then we have to do this whole list, right?”

Remember (2): to awaken a particular feeling in somebody?

Peyton woke my feelings of strength, goals, determination, perseverance, drive……..I realized if Peyton doesn’t see obstacles then why should I? I’ve been so busy feeling overwhelmed and stressed about everything I HAVE to do for this project…. I forgot my own rule.. walk then run.

Peyton is right we have to get it ALL done, so instead of just having an overwhelming “To Do” list I need to have a To Do list … set by priorities.

Thank you Peyton… for once again being my inspiration….. You are a wonderful example of “Turning Autism into Awesomism” 💙

Watch for my next blog…. about our new and awesome project!! I think you will really be inspired. In the meantime here is Peyton’s twitter @PeytonAwesomism his Instagram PeytonsYearofAwesomism and his Flipboard ( which is his favorite) 😎 http://Check out my Flipboard magazine, Peyton’s Year Of Awesomism http://flip.it/KbJKTd

Fishing is for the rest of us!

Blog by Peyton White:

Fishing  is an outdoor sport in which a person tries to catch a fish by using a rod, a reel and bait. You normally start fishing in either a lake or a pond. Before I got into fishing, I watched the video about choosing the right fishing rods, fishing bait layer and such on YouTube from a channel called Fishing for the Rest of Us. https://m.youtube.com/fishingfortherestofus?uid=FcDiOaLOFAqVk9dP_NePmQ I subscribed to his channel to keep an eye on his new videos, so that I can watch them at anytime he uploads new ones. It will also allow me to keep learning how to successfully catch fish. Once I turned 18, I decided I would like to start fishing, because I wanted to start doing more outdoor activities. Then I really became interested in fishing, once I started watching his videos on YouTube. On January 3rd, Fishing for the Rest of Us sent me  a bag of soft fishing lures in the mail, so that I can use them to catch a fish. I was very happy to get these, and thought it was very nice of them. My parents and I are going to North Dakota soon, and we will be going fishing anywhere there’s a lake nearby us in Minot.

I have always really been into fish. When I was growing up, I used to have fish in my old fish tank aquarium, and I had several of them. I always took good care of them and fed them every day whenever they were hungry. I haven’t had my own fish since I was young. 2 years ago, me, my parents and my best friend went to the Downtown Aquarium in downtown Houston. We were guests of Tilman Fertitta who owns the aquarium, and he gave us the tickets to come and visit there. I had such a great time and learned so much, and I even made a Flipboard magazine about our day. I realized after going to the aquarium I really wanted to get more into fishing, because I have fascination with fish. It would also be great for me to do more outdoor activities, and it would help me de stress while I’m fishing. I can also go fishing with my dad and my oldest brother, as well as by myself. I’m looking forward to going fishing, I can’t wait to start. If you love fishing or interested in it, you really should watch Fishing for the Rest Of Us’s videos on YouTube and subscribe.

You can go fishing on the ocean, sea, small lake, ice fishing and such. What you need before you go are rods, lures, hooks, plastic worms and baits. Right now I have soft plastic lures, the gift I just got in the mail, and buckets. All I need is a rod which I don’t have yet. Me and my parents will find perfect rods for us in the store. We’ll try to find them at Bass Pro Shop, Dick’s Sporting Goods or any other stores that sell fishing stuff. My mother has a Flipboard magazine called Fishing is Awesome, you should check it out! I’m creating a Flipboard magazine called Fishing Adventure, and I’ll be adding articles and fishing videos. Please follow my magazine and keep up with what I’m doing. I will also keep rewatching the fishing videos on YouTube so that I can remember what I need to do to become a great fisherman. Thanks for reading, and I hope you follow my Blog at PeytonWhiteBlog.wordpress.com, my Flipboard account Peyton White, my Twitter account @mistermarvel99 and my Instagram account mistermarvel99.  http://flip.it/u02Fw9

Flipping Autism into Awesomism

Last week Mark, Peyton and I had the privilege to meet the awesome people at Flipboard. We love Flipboard in our home and are always spreading the “Awesomeness” of Flipboard to everyone and anyone who will listen. I find most people know of/use Twitter, Facebook, snapchat etc etc…but haven’t heard of Flipboard. This is a shame for so many reasons, but most of all because it truly has the ability to change the world. I know this may seem like an over statement, but let me explain why I say this. image

Mark Twain said “A person who won’t read has no advantage over one who can’t read” Reading is an important tool to learning about so many subjects that we may never otherwise be exposed to. I remember as a kid reading the covers of so many magazines, in stores and having them peak my interest in subjects. I taught my older kids to be inquisitive, and trust me they are..in fact there are times I get frustrated by their questions, and yes they are now adults : ) When Peyton was young I never saw  that desire in him. As I have stated before these were all warning signs to me. I knew I would need to help develop that desire in him to learn. With Flipboard I can teach him more than I can with other similar venues. When he was young he did “magazine therapy” We would sit for hours and I would teach him facial expressions, common words etc…this was a great way for him to recognize not only emotions, but also to build his vocabulary. I truly wish I had Flipboard back then, as I could and would have designed magazines that would have been even more helpful for Peyton. One of the most beautiful things about Flipboard is that I can have pictures, blogs and videos all in a magazine that can and do help Peyton learn. He has his own magazines and they help stir his creativity and promote learning. Not all autistic teens and adults learn to read and that’s where Flipboard can really help. While it is a “reader” it allows for beautiful pictures and videos as well. We all learn at a different rate and in different ways. Flipboard allows for many of those different learning styles” to be used!
